Basecat is a community-driven memecoin built on Base, the Ethereum layer 2 network developed by Coinbase, centred on a cream-coloured cat character wearing a small blue construction helmet. The token launched through the o1 Launchpad on Base on August 15, 2026.[1][2]
Basecat has no formal team, roadmap, staking, or governance, and its own community site describes it as an independent project with "no invented utility" and "no fake roadmap" that is "not affiliated with Base or Coinbase." Its stated purpose is to serve as a "community-run home" for holders, built around a shared cat-themed identity, meme creation, and repeated verification of the correct contract address.[2][4]

Basecat opened for trading on Base at 18:03 UTC on Saturday, August 15, 2026, when its first Uniswap pair was created.[3] It was issued through the o1 launchpad.[5] The launch involved no presale and no team allocation.[6]
The day after launch, on August 16, 2026, a community declared a takeover of the project, and DEX Screener's profile recorded a community ownership claim that same day. Because the contract carried no administrative keys, that takeover was of the identity and social accounts rather than of any contract controls.[3] From launch the token rose steeply: on Sunday, August 16, 2026, the deepest pool ran from an open of $0.000374 to a close of $0.011608 — a gain of roughly 3,000% — and printed an intraday high of $0.020449, which the deepest pool did not exceed in the days immediately following.[2]
