Adrian Li is a software engineer, entrepreneur, and ecosystem development leader with over a decade of experience in the technology and blockchain sectors. Based in Tokyo, Japan, he leads developer and ecosystem initiatives in Asia for the Ethereum Foundation. [3] [4] His career is defined by a combination of full-stack engineering contributions to open-source web3 tools, product leadership, and co-founding decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols. [1] [2]
Adrian Li completed a Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Toronto from 2006 to 2011. He later pursued legal studies at University of British Columbia, earning a Juris Doctor (JD) between 2012 and 2015. Prior to his university education, he attended Dr Norman Bethune Collegiate Institute from 2002 to 2006. [2]
Li began his professional career as a freelance programmer with a focus on frontend design and development. He co-founded Ahead Studios in June 2013, a role he held until February 2015. Later, from September 2015 to May 2016, he co-founded another venture named Olis. [2]
Starting in June 2016, he began working as a self-employed technical consultant, a role he has maintained alongside his other professional commitments. In this capacity, he has provided expertise to startups associated with prominent accelerator programs, including Y Combinator and Techstars. This experience exposed him to fast-paced, high-growth startup environments. [2] [3]
Li's dedicated focus on blockchain technology began around 2017. From December 2017 to June 2018, he worked as a Senior Developer at b0x, a decentralized margin trading platform. There, he was responsible for designing and developing the portal decentralized application (dApp) for the platform's Ethereum smart contracts and also contributed to their JavaScript protocol library. [2]
In August 2018, Li joined ConsenSys as a Senior Software Engineer. During his time there, which lasted until March 2019, he engaged in enterprise blockchain consulting. A notable achievement from this period was his instrumental role in securing Hitachi’s first blockchain proof-of-concept (POC), demonstrating his ability to apply technical knowledge to enterprise business objectives. [2]
While at ConsenSys, Li became deeply involved with the Truffle Suite, a leading development environment for Ethereum smart contracts. From August 2018 to May 2020, he served as the Director of Frontend Engineering & Developer Relations for Truffle. In this leadership role, he oversaw work on critical open-source developer tooling. His direct, hands-on contributions included development for Truffle projects such as Drizzle, a front-end library for connecting dApps to smart contracts, and Ganache UI, a personal blockchain for local Ethereum development. This role combined his full-stack engineering skills with developer advocacy and product leadership within the open-source community. [2] [1]
Building on his experience in the Ethereum ecosystem, Li moved into entrepreneurship within the decentralized finance (DeFi) space. From June to September 2020, he served as a Tech Evangelist and worked in developer relations for UMA, a decentralized financial contracts platform, where he focused on business development and developer outreach. [2]
In November 2020, Li co-founded DFX Finance, a decentralized exchange protocol focused on foreign exchange-backed stablecoins. As a co-founder, he led product development, built the engineering team, and managed business development for the protocol until March 2023. [2] [3] Sources also indicate that Li founded a second, unnamed DeFi startup. [1]
In March 2023, Li joined the Ethereum Foundation, the non-profit organization that supports the Ethereum protocol and its ecosystem. He has held several leadership roles within the foundation, focusing on ecosystem growth and developer support. [2]
From March 2023 to June 2025, Li served as the ZK EcoDev Lead within the Privacy and Scaling Explorations (PSE) team. In this role, he led the Foundation's Zero-Knowledge (ZK) Education efforts. His responsibilities included building a team, developing a comprehensive ZK curriculum, and launching an educational program that successfully supported over 200 alumni, equipping them with knowledge of advanced cryptographic technologies. [2]
Following his work with the PSE team, Li transitioned to the role of Founder Success Team Lead from June 2025 to December 2025. His focus shifted to providing direct support for startups building on Ethereum. He offered hands-on product feedback and organized events designed to connect founders with relevant teams and resources within the Ethereum Foundation, helping to foster growth at the application layer of the ecosystem. [2]
Since December 2025, Li has served as the Asia EcoDev Lead for the Ethereum Foundation, based in Tokyo, Japan. In this capacity, he is responsible for supporting the Foundation's mission across Asia. His work involves engaging with founders, researchers, and ecosystem partners throughout the region. A key part of his role is to facilitate the expansion of technology firms into Asia by applying localized Go-To-Market (GTM) strategies and sourcing senior engineering talent to strengthen the regional developer community. [2] [3]
Li is also a public speaker at industry events. In 2025, he presented at EDCON2025, a major community Ethereum conference. His talk, titled "How Open-Source Can Supercharge Your Career," shared insights from his experience building a career through contributions to open-source projects. [4]
He also maintains an active presence on developer platforms like Stack Overflow, where his 17 answers and 77 questions have reached an audience of approximately 133,000 people, reflecting his engagement in providing support to the wider developer community. [3]
