History

Numbers Protocol was founded in 2019, with a long-standing goal to address critical issues in the digital media space, namely misinformation, copyright, and royalty distribution. Its use cases include Reuters coverage of the 2020 US Presidential election, climate-change photo collections, cataloging and preserving war crime evidence in Ukraine, and supporting artists and creators to monetize their creative work with better controls.^[6]

Numbers Protocol can be adopted on all EVM-compatible blockchains such as Ethereum, BNB Chain, Avalanche, and Polygon. However, to deliver consistent and dependable services, the need for a dedicated blockchain became apparent. This led to the development of Numbers Mainnet.^[6]

In December 2022, the Numbers Mainnet was launched as a major milestone in its mission to revolutionize the digital media content industry. It is said to be the first blockchain dedicated to ensuring the provenance of digital media, offering improved efficiency, enhanced stability, and reduced costs.^[6]

NUM is the native protocol token of Numbers Protocol. It is primarily a utility token designed to incentivize users to create, archive, and verify content with integrity. The vision of Numbers Protocol is to create an ecosystem where photos (encompassing both images and videos) matter by leveraging proofs, integrity records, and data provenance to increase the credibility and legitimacy of registered photos in the network.^[8]

Participants, such as verifiers and other network operators can get rewards by providing services to increase the credibility and legitimacy of registered photos. NUM tokens can also be used to pay for services running in the decentralized photo network.^[8]

Tokenomics

NUM is minted from Numbers Blockchain and bridged to Ethereum. A bridge supported by Chainport can further bridge the ERC-20 NUM tokens to the BNB chain.^[9]
