Robert Drost, Ph.D., is an American engineer and executive who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Eigen Foundation. With a distinguished background in high-speed computer architecture and systems design from his time at Sun Microsystems and Oracle, Drost transitioned to the blockchain industry to lead the foundation supporting the EigenLayer protocol. [1] [2]
Drost pursued his higher education in electrical engineering. He earned his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Following his undergraduate studies, he attended Stanford University, where he completed both a Master of Science (M.S.) and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Electrical Engineering. [1]
Robert Drost has held senior leadership, research, and engineering roles across hardware systems, networking, and blockchain infrastructure. Prior to entering the blockchain sector, he built a long career in hardware engineering and systems architecture. At Sun Microsystems, he served as a Distinguished Engineer and senior research leader, contributing to high-performance computing, chip interconnects, and proximity communication technologies. After Sun’s acquisition by Oracle, he continued in senior architectural roles, working on hardware and systems design and being listed as an inventor on multiple patents related to computer architecture and high-speed signaling.
In the blockchain industry, Drost has held executive and governance positions spanning research, protocol development, and ecosystem oversight. He became Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the Eigen Foundation in late 2023, following the foundation’s public announcement in early 2024. In this role, he oversees organizational operations, resource stewardship, and governance initiatives supporting the EigenLayer protocol. His prior blockchain-related roles include Head of Research and Development at ConsenSys, directorships at the Connext Foundation and Ligero, and research partnership at Ethereal Ventures. Earlier in his career, he also co-founded and led Pluribus Networks, where he was involved in scaling the company and guiding its technical and strategic direction through multiple funding stages.
