Pear Protocol

Pear Protocol is a non-custodial trading layer and front-end designed to execute and manage long/short pair and basket trades across integrated perpetual futures venues rather than operate as a standalone . It connects to on-chain trading engines such as , SYMMIO, , and Vertex, routing both legs of a trade through a single interface so users can take simultaneous long and short positions with on multiple assets.[2][8] The protocol launched its public beta on May 13, 2024 on Arbitrum-based perpetual venues.[9]

The interface focuses on long/short pair and basket trading with tools such as one-click ratio-based take-profit and stop-loss, limit and TWAP (time-weighted average price) orders, and risk metrics including net funding and profit and loss (PnL) on the pair ratio, presented in a unified dashboard.[2] Pear Protocol is built primarily on and, on venues like , routes orders using on-chain builder codes so that execution occurs at the underlying exchange while custody of funds remains with the user or the integrated trading engine.[3][8]

Overview

Pair trading is a market-neutral strategy that involves simultaneously taking a long position in one asset and a short position in another related asset. The goal is to profit from the relative performance of the two assets, rather than the direction of the overall market.

For example, a trader who believes (SOL) will outperform (ETH) could go long on SOL and short on ETH. The profit or loss is determined by the change in the ratio of the two assets' prices. This strategy allows traders to speculate on asset relationships and potentially generate returns in bull, bear, or sideways markets.[1]

Pear Protocol was developed to address the complexity and fragmented nature of executing pair trades in the DeFi ecosystem. Manually managing two separate positions on different platforms can be inefficient and prone to errors, such as and poor timing on execution. The protocol aims to solve this by providing a unified dashboard for one-click trade execution, position management, and risk analysis. It integrates with established decentralized exchanges to access their liquidity and offerings, acting as a specialized front-end for pair traders. The platform provides tools for charting asset ratios directly, setting risk management parameters like take-profit and stop-loss on the pair's ratio, and analyzing position metrics such as profit and loss (PnL) and net funding rates.[2]

The protocol is designed for both retail and professional traders, offering features that range from simple one-click execution to more advanced order types and weighting options. By abstracting the underlying complexity of managing two separate perpetual positions, Pear Protocol seeks to make the pair trading strategy more accessible and efficient for a wider range of market participants.[2]

History

Pear Protocol's development and launch progressed through several key phases. The platform's Public Beta was launched on May 13, 2024, initially building its infrastructure on top of Arbitrum-based engines such as the and Vertex protocols to offer users access to over 210 trading pairs. Following the beta period, the protocol held a public sale for its native token, $PEAR, on September 17, 2024, which reportedly sold out within 50 minutes. The $PEAR token became available for trading on the on September 25, 2024.[9]

On November 11, 2024, the protocol launched its intent-based product, which introduced features such as fee rebates paid in ETH and an integrated referral system. This update also directed fees generated from the intent-based system into the pool for revenue sharing with token holders. Early integrations centered on Arbitrum-based engines, and over time and SYMMIO became the primary venues for advanced pair and basket trading functionality.[2][8] By mid-2025, Pear had reported processing nearly $1 billion in cumulative trading volume and serving over 4,000 traders in its beta phase.[10]

A significant integration occurred on July 28, 2025, when the Pear Protocol engine for the exchange went live, expanding the platform's reach and trading options on an order book-based perpetuals venue.[9] This launch coincided with the announcement of a $4.1 million strategic funding round led by Castle Island Ventures, with participation from VC, Florin Digital, and Sigil Fund. According to public statements, the capital was earmarked to expand Pear's product suite—including vaults and APIs on HyperEVM, a re-launch of its spot token with deeper liquidity on ’s spot order book—and to support user growth and broader revenue initiatives.[10]

Technology & Features

Pear Protocol operates as an execution and routing layer that connects to the back-end infrastructure of other and perpetual futures engines. It is not a standalone but rather a specialized non-custodial interface that splits a trade into long and short legs and routes each leg to integrated venues such as , SYMMIO, , and Vertex.[2][8] User funds remain either in their own wallet or deposited directly into the underlying trading engines; Pear manages order creation, synchronization, and monitoring but does not custody assets. This architecture allows it to offer deep liquidity and a wide range of tradable assets without needing to build its own exchange from the ground up.[3][8]

Integrations

The protocol integrates with several major on-chain trading engines to power its pair and basket trades. These integrations provide the liquidity and necessary for the platform's operations. As of late 2025, the primary integrated platforms include:

  • : A decentralized perpetuals exchange with an order book architecture on which Pear functions as a non-custodial trading front-end, routing paired perp orders via builder codes on while remains deposited directly in .[3][8]
  • SYMMIO (SYMM): A peer-to-peer bilateral derivatives protocol that Pear uses to structure intent
  • and OTC-style pair trades between counterparties, enabling custom hedging and directional strategies.[2][8]
  • : A decentralized perpetuals exchange operating on and , used by Pear to route perp pair trades directly from user wallets on without custody by Pear.[8]
  • Vertex Protocol: A hybrid order book–AMM DEX on that Pear connects to for perp markets as part of its broader venue set.[8]

While and Vertex remain supported venues, Pear's actively developed feature set—including advanced ratio orders and builder-code-based routing—is centered on Hyperliquid and SYMMIO.[2][10]

Use Cases

The platform is designed to support various trading strategies that the relative performance of assets.

  • Narrative-Based Trading: This involves trading based on prevailing market trends or "narratives." For instance, a trader might long a token from a trending sector like AI and short a token from a less favored sector, betting on the narrative's strength.[4]
  • Fundamental Trading: This strategy is based on the fundamental metrics of different protocols. A trader could, for example, long a token with a low relative to its and short a token with a higher ratio, speculating on a future price correction.[4]
  • Technical Trading (Charting): This involves applying technical analysis directly to the price ratio chart of two assets. Traders look for patterns, support, and resistance levels on the ratio chart to make trading decisions.[4]
  • Statistical : This advanced strategy focuses on identifying statistical mispricings between correlated assets. Traders aim to profit from the expectation that the pair's price ratio will revert to its historical mean.[4]

One specific application highlighted by the protocol is trading Dominance (BTC.D). The BTC.D index, which measures 's relative to the total crypto market cap, is available as a tradable asset on the platform. Traders can long the index to bet on outperforming or short it to bet on the beginning of an " season."[5]

Pear also supports hedging concentrated liquidity provision positions by using pair-trade limit orders to offset potential , for example by shorting one leg of an LP pair when price moves outside a chosen range. Its intent-based engine allows users to submit intents that specify desired pair or basket exposures, which are then routed or matched via bilateral derivatives contracts rather than traditional order book-based perpetuals. This engine underlies trades involving composite indices such as BTC Dominance, where BTC.D can be used as either leg in a pair trade. It is positioned as a way to express relative-value or market-structure views—such as rotations between and altcoins—without manually managing separate perpetual positions on each venue.[2][5]

Tokenomics

The Pear Protocol ecosystem is powered by its native utility and , $PEAR. The are designed to incentivize participation, reward long-term holders, and facilitate decentralized governance.[6]

The $PEAR Token

$PEAR is an token on the network. Its primary functions include revenue sharing and providing trading benefits. The token is available for trading on decentralized exchanges like and , as well as the .[1]

Staking & Revenue Share

Users can their $PEAR tokens to receive stPEAR (staked PEAR), a non-transferable representation of their position in the pool. Holders of stPEAR are entitled to a share of the protocol's revenue, with each holder's share determined by the amount of stPEAR they hold. According to the project's documentation, 80% of the net fees generated by the platform are distributed to stakers, primarily in ETH accrued from trading activity routed to integrated venues.[1][7]

In addition to revenue sharing, holding stPEAR provides users with discounts on the platform. The size of the discount is tiered based on the amount of stPEAR held by the user, aligning both revenue share and fee benefits with participation. The PEAR token is also intended to support governance through a PearDAO structure, giving stakers a role in decisions over protocol parameters and future integrations with other exchanges and products. Governance voting power is expected to be proportional to a holder's staked PEAR balance, linking influence to long-term commitment to the protocol. Planned areas of governance include treasury management, prioritization of new products and features, and other aspects of the protocol roadmap.[7][6]

Backers

Pear Protocol is backed by several venture capital firms within the cryptocurrency space. Its listed supporters include Founders Fund, Ventures, Prismatic Capital, Portico Ventures, Castle Island Ventures, VC, Florin Digital, and Sigil Fund.[1][10]
